  • GTS Employer Network Event

    Fri 30 Sep 2022

We had the pleasure of holding our first GTS employer network event on Tuesday this week at Great Torrington Town Hall for 2022/2023 with the theme 'Work Experience to Future Workforce'.

We were delighted to host Karen Crosby and Tim Wood from CSW, who gave us an insight into the benefits of work experience for employers, for the pupils and the Health and Safety considerations.

Our Q&A panel gave some amusing stories and shared best practices that they have found work for them when hosting a pupil. We would like to thank, Richard Barnes, Yvette Quance, Tom Williamson-Cary and Tom Gleeson for their time and sharing ideas.

If you would like to find out more about hosting a work experience pupil or are interested in working with the school to showcase your industry and careers available to our pupils then please get in touch with either Louise Leonard lleonard@gts.devon.sch.uk  or Jacqui Royse JRoyse@gts.devon.sch.uk

  • Ofsted recognises the successful work of Great Torrington School

    Wed 21 Sep 2022

Great Torrington School is pleased to acknowledge the outcome of its recent Ofsted visit.  During the section 8 visit, on 5th and 6th July 2022, Ofsted concluded that GTS remains a “GOOD” school.   For all those involved, pupils, parents, and staff, it was a very positive experience and one that clearly demonstrated the many strengths of the school.

    What Ofsted said about GTS:

“Staff are ambitious for every pupil.  Teachers are passionate about their subjects, which motivates pupils.”

“There are good relationships between staff and pupils.”

    “Pupils are polite and friendly.”

“Leaders have planned an ambitious and inclusive curriculum……. and have high expectations of pupils.”

“Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are well supported.”

“Leaders and governors have a clear vision for the school.  They are ambitious to ensure the school is inclusive and that there is a wide range of experiences for every pupil.”

“Pupils feel happy and safe at school.”

The inspection clearly validated the work of the school over the past three years.

“I am incredibly proud of all the work of the pupils and staff, during what has been a very turbulent time in education.  The whole school community has shown a huge amount of resilience, dedication, and determination, in ensuring the best possible learning environment and outcome for its pupils.  The Ofsted inspection allowed us time to reflect upon everything that has been achieved and to celebrate the successes of the pupils and staff.  Having had such a positive Ofsted report, followed by our best ever set of GCSE results, has clearly demonstrated the journey the school is on. I am confident that the school will continue to build on these successes as we strive to provide the best possible education for our young people.”

  • Remembering the life of Her Majesty The Queen

    Fri 09 Sep 2022

This morning pupils paused their academic education so we could remember the life of Her Majesty The Queen.

Pupils watched the following short film from the BBC, which highlighted some of the significant events The Queen witnessed during her reign as Monarch.

One of our pupils then played The Last Post to the school, before we observed a two-minute silence.

Flowers were laid last night at Windsor Castle on behalf of Great Torrington School by a member of our staff, Ms Fisher, following a visit to Parliament.

We will continue to mourn the loss of The Queen and provide support to our pupils, families, staff and the wider community during this period of national mourning.

  • Queen Elizabeth II

Great Torrington School would like to express its deepest sympathies on the passing of Her Majesty The Queen earlier tonight.
