  • Year 11 - The National Citizen Service (NCS) Opportunity

    Tue 25 Jan 2022

Great Torrington School welcomed National Citizen Service (NCS) yesterday to talk to year 11s at lunchtime and breaktimes. They will keep popping in over the term for students to have a chat about the programme.

National Citizen Service is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, open to all 15 to 17-year-olds. The program helps young people to build skills for work and life while taking on exciting challenges, making new friends, and contributing to their community.

A place on NCS is worth around £1200. However, thanks to government funding for the programme, NCS only ask for a contribution of £50 to cover some basic costs. They want to ensure that everyone can do NCS so there are bursaries available if you need some help to cover the cost.

Bursaries are available to those who are either:

    • Eligible for free school meals

    • On an EHCP

    • In or have recently left care

    • A young carer

This summer, there are a few start dates that you can choose from:

    • Monday 4th– Friday 8th July (Residential) and Monday 11th – Friday 15th July (Non-Residential

    • Monday 18th – Friday 22nd July (Residential) and Monday 25th – Friday 29th July (Non-Residential)

    • Monday 8th – Friday 12th August (Residential) and Monday 25th – 29th August (Non-Residential)

  • New Build Project for GTS

    Tue 25 Jan 2022

Great Torrington School is excited to announce a new build project which is being completed with support from Devon County Council. Planning permission has been granted, and funding is now in place.

We’re working alongside TFQ architects to deliver a new building with additional classrooms, a new library, and several small group spaces. By creating additional classrooms, we are hoping to develop more specialised teaching areas to enhance the delivery of our curriculum.

This new building will also enable a designated dining space to be developed for our pupils. The block will be positioned within an enclosed area, of low use, having minimal impact on the rest of the school and making good use of this space. It will also be linked into the existing corridors to ensure it’s an integral part of the school.

This represents a significant investment by both Devon County Council and Great Torrington School which will ensure the school is able to serve its community and provide the best possible education and opportunities to our young people moving forward.

The aim is for the new block to open its doors to our staff and pupils in early 2023; watch this space!
