Strike Action - 30/11/2011

We have been informed by the NUT, ATL, NASUWT, GMB, UNISON and NAHT Unions that they will be taking industrial action in the form of a strike on Wednesday, 30th November 2011. We are also aware that a number of other unions are holding ballots with their members with respect to taking strike action on this day.

Free School Meals

We are asked by the Children & Young People’s Services Directorate (CYPS) at County Hall to remind parents of their entitlement to free meals for their children.

By registering for Free School Meals you will also be entitled to reduced musician tuition fees at Great Torrington School and you could get help with the cost of school trips.

Operation Christmas Child

FBI are organising a collection for Operation Christmas Child. This is a Christian charity that sends shoe boxes full of gifts to children in poor areas of the world. Any pupils interested need to see Ms Sparrow or Mrs Laarveld for a leaflet.

Street Dance Success

Seventeen pupils from Great Torrington School travelled to Plymouth's Guildhall on Sunday to compete in the UDO National High School South West Street Dance Championships, and returned with more trophies.

The day began with the duo's competition. From the years 7-9 category, Payton Stacey with Rebecca Isaac and Ella Lambert with Tegan Spear, both made the semi-finals. Tate Rowtcliff and Danny Witney came 1st place overall after 3 tough rounds. In the year 10-11 category, Leah Taylor with Rosanna Hoadley reached the semi-final stage whilst Erin Taylor with Witney reached the final round (last 6) but were unfortunate not to be placed in the top 3.

Next was the solo competition. All pupils competing individually to be crowned the best solo dancer in the South West. Payton Stacey reached the semi-final and Danny Witney came 3rd overall in the years 7-9 category, with Witney Stacey reaching the semi-finals stage

Then came the team's category. Torrington School's new year 7-9 crew Sneakers (made up of Ella lambert, Tegan Spear, Rebecca Isaac, Freya Cooper, Maya Eastabrook, Olivia Treml, Payton Stacey, Britney Smith, Lois Papworth & Billie Jordan in their first ever competition and only being together for 6 weeks, came an amazing 2nd place. In the year 10-11 category, in only their second year, Streetz Dance Crew (consisting of Leah Taylor, Rosanna Hoadley, Tate Rowtcliff, Chloe Kenneally, Danny Witney, Witney Stacey and Erin Taylor) also came an amazing 2nd place!

All these pupils now go on to compete against the best in the country at the National Finals in Blackpool on December 3rd where they will be mixing with the stars such as Diversity from Britain's got Talent.
