Year 7 took part in a race meeting for a national engineering competition this term!

A fabulous day’s racing for the line was enjoyed at the beginning of March, as Year 7 competed in the “Race for the Line” Rocket Car Challenge: a National STEM Competition in association with the Blood Hound Supersonic car.  Year 7 worked together in groups of four with 40 foam rocket-powered cars that they built, designed and then raced against rival teams.

We have heard that three of the cars have qualified to race against other schools in the region, in Plymouth, at the Regional Finals at the end of April.

Organiser and Science Teacher, Mr Rawle, said, “It’s been a very successful day: Year 7 have been waiting for this day with a lot of anticipation in seeing how fast their cars would travel.  It’s been a fun and educational challenge that has engaged the Year 7s in STEM.”

We would like to thank the Royal Navy for running the event, Mrs Fisher and Mr Robilliard for overseeing the manufacturing of the cars in their lessons and Mr Dorrell for helping things run smoothly on the day.

The winners are:

1-      Freya Jeffery, Kirra Rowcliffe, Poppy Rooke and Sydnee Gardiner

2-      Armani Tee, Max Johnstone, Jasper Blight

3-      Iona Hopkins, Leah Roy, Amy Rudman
