Great Torrington School makes the grade in new OFSTED report

Posted on: 19/06/2012

Students and staff at Great Torrington School were celebrating today following the publication of the school’s latest OFSTED report.

During their visit on 30th-31st May 2012 the team of 4 Inspectors concluded that Great Torrington School is a good school. This reflects the excellent work that has been achieved not only by all members of the staff but also by our students; the improvement in exam results year-on-year is testimony to the overall standards being achieved. Last year was the fifth consecutive year that our students improved on the numbers achieving five GCSE A*- C including English and Maths, maintaining our average above the national standard.

It has been acknowledged that the new inspection regime that came into force at the beginning of this year is much tougher than the one it replaced. During their rigorous inspection, the team observed lessons and spoke to staff, students, governors, parents, carers and partners associated with the school. Further evidence was also provided by the staff, students, parents and carers who completed questionnaires. This information was all used to draw conclusions about the quality of education at the school.

All aspects that were assessed by OFSTED were graded as “Good” through the school.

In the report the inspectors highlighted what they found to be some of the notable features of Great Torrington School including;

Their high attendance is testimony to their enjoyment of school and the importance they attach to learning”
“Very positive relationships underpin the harmonious and supportive community of the school”
“Equality of opportunity is at the heart of much of the school’s work”
“Lessons are characterised by good relationships with students, effective use of new technologies to aid learning and clear teacher explanations”
“The high expectations of senior leaders are evident in the challenging targets set for students”

The inspectors were particularly impressed by the students of the school who they described as; ‘Welcoming, friendly and polite’ and in his summing up after the inspection the inspector said that “We have thoroughly enjoyed our two days in school and enjoyed our time we have spent with your students. The students were unfailingly polite, well-behaved, confident, smiled a lot and held doors open when appropriate – what a thoroughly nice bunch of kids”.

Headteacher Tracey Amos said; ‘I am absolutely delighted that the hard work of staff, students, Governors and parents has been recognised and celebrated in this report and that the qualities of Great Torrington School have been so clearly highlighted. The report also indicates what we can do to improve further and I am in no doubt that with the continued commitment and support of everyone involved, Great Torrington School will become an ‘outstanding’ school.’

A copy of the full report is now available here on the school website and on the OFSTED website
