Rotary 'Young Chef of the Year' Competition

Posted on: 15/11/2019

The national Young chef competition is a well organised, established and successful competition organised by the Rotary International in Great Britain. Torrington Rotary Club has for a number of years organised and supported  Great Torrington School in entering the competition and kindly helps subsidise the cost for pupils to entering the competition.

This year’s competition we received sixteen enthusiastic young people to take part in this well-known competition and some excellent food was produced and prepared to a very high standard.

Our young people are asked to prepare a three course healthy meal for two people within a budget of £20 in just two hours and aims to encourage pupils to:

·         Learn to cook a healthy meal

·         Develop good presentation skills

·         Consider food hygiene issues

·         Develop organisation, planning and time keeping skills

·         Develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation

Many congratulations to all who took part and to our winners who go through to the next stage of the competition at Petroc College. After much deliberation the judges selected two joint winners as Leah Thorne and Ailis Temple Thurston, with Hannah Daniel in second place and reserve for the north Devon Competition taking place in December.  All our competitors were presented with certificates of participation.

Thank you to Mr Anderson, Torrington Rotary Club and our judge Mrs Margaret Hopkins for their time and commitment today, we look forward to repeating the event this time next year.
