Year 8 Rugby

The year 8 boys have been on an epic rugby journey over the past two seasons. In the dark depths of winter with only 7 players turning out for training, things were looking bleak for the then year 7s and there were times when I thought that we were not going to survive as a team. However, determination and commitment saw the squad grow last season and the boys topped the tier two group of schools in the end of season play offs.

This year we started the season with a series of friendlies against Westbuckland School, although we lost each one we were competitive holding the scores close and scoring a few tries of our own. Increased numbers, better understanding and improved skills has seen a transformation in the team who are now playing some high quality rugby.

During the main part of the league season, the boys beat Chumleigh and Ilfracombe comfortably scoring tries out wide and through the forwards. Bideford’s experienced and strong side proved too much and the boys were unable to get into their game losing by a heavy margin.

Into the top tier for the play off finals the boys were slow to get started and went behind to 3 early tries against South Molton. Regrouping in second half the boys bravely fought back and were unlucky not to score an equaliser and disappointingly lost 2 -3. Bideford were up next and despite the previous heavy defeat started the game with confidence and commitment. Bideford were knocked out of their stride by GTS who showed tenacity in defence and pace out wide, the hard fought game eventually finished as a 2-2 draw showing just how far the boys had come.

Going into the final game against Park the boys knew they could still be in with a chance of winning if the results went their way. Determined to finish strongly GTS saved some of their best rugby to last coming out winners 6 -2, unfortunately South Molton had won again crowning themselves champions but our overall try difference meant we finished as runners up! A great result, a great season and a great journey!

Well done to all involved.
