The Drum Theatre, Plymouth

Posted on: 02/03/2016

Great Torrington School will be performing at School and the Plymouth Drum Theatre as part of National Theatre Connections - a nationwide celebration of new plays for young people.

Connections is produced by the National Theatre and supported by a number of individuals, trusts and foundations.

Connections plays are commissioned for and about young people from some of the best contemporary playwrights, for performance by schools and youth theatres all over the UK and Ireland, making Connections one of the world's largest celebrations of youth theatre.

For their 21st Anniversary, Connections is working with 500 youth theatres and schools to stage 12 fantastic plays, picked from the 150 plus they have commissioned for young people since 1995, and transfer their production to one of Connections 40 Partner Theatres across the UK.

Great Torrington School will be performing Eclipse by Simon Armitage.

This modern piece is part of the 2016 National Theatre Connections Festival. Six friends are interviewed by the police after the disappearance of Lucy Lime, a strange, unnerving girl - 'I am a walking universe, I am' - whom they met beneath the cliffs on a Cornish beach, just before a total eclipse of the Sun.

Mr Pluckrose, Head of Performing Arts at GTS, 'I chose Eclipse as I'm a huge fan of the work of Simon Armitage and I loved the rich language and characters. In this play he explores the themes of self-perception, child play and ritual. All of the characters are equally fascinating in how they question themselves and react to each other as Lucy Lime challenges their beliefs or self-presentations.'
