The Big Bang @ GTS

The Big Bang @ GTS (Great Torrington School) is a STEM event aimed at pupils in year 5 – 7 from across North Devon schools.

The event brings together a culmination of partners from local industry and education. These include, TDK Lambda, Eaton Aerospace, Beran Instruments, Exeter College, Anglo Krempel, Bicton & Duchy College, GCHQ, Institute of Physics, Institute of Engineering & Technology, Petroc, Plymouth University, Greenfield Engineering, Group Training Development, Sciencedipity, Dartmoor Zoo, Met Office, Mrs Recycle, Wow Scrapstore and more.

The aim of the Big Bang @ GTS is to show pupils how science of today is technology of tomorrow, with interactive STEM activities.  Throughout the day there are an array of interactive workshops, which involve hands on practical skills in STEM, from extracting your own DNA in the who do you think you are workshop, to working with green screen technology, making slime and developing your own photographs waken with pinhole cameras.

Rachel Higgs (Head of Faculty) says “The events over previous years have been a great success, engaging over a thousand pupils from over 30 different schools across North Devon. The Big Bang fairs have surpassed all expectations, the interactive stands provided by the employers really enhance the experience, showing pupils how STEM is crucial in the employment and development of North Devon.”

Ms Royse (Deputy Head at GTS) says: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in the Big Bang events. The feedback has been so positive and inspiring, such as “It was the best event of its type I have attended”, “brilliant” and “fantastic event”.

Exhibitors Greenfield Engineering said ''Wow - what a day! It was fantastic to see the students folding up the baubles and aeroplanes and to see the delight on their faces as the flat profiles came to life in their hands. At one point there were at least 30 students around our stall all eagerly listening and folding up the models. An excellent and well organised event which was thoroughly enjoyed by students and adults.'' Steve Killner Training Officer.

It was fabulous to see so many happy young people totally engrossed in STEM activities…hearing Year 6 pupils telling their teachers it was ”The best school trip ever!!”
