Year 11 Footballers are North Devon School Champions

Year 11 football, after finishing runner up in year 7,8,9 and 10, the legends below have finally become North Devon School Champions! It was their last school match and a great way to sign off their time at GTS. They have been a super bunch of young men to work with. If you see any of them please congratulate them as they played tremendously beating Bideford in the semi-finals and Ilfracombe 4-1 in the final.

Man of the match went to Oscar J (3) and Oliver L (1)

Signed off by one chuffed teacher, Mr Bolton.

GTS afterschool Volleyball club started in September this year. It has been a fantastic start and has exceeded Mr Rhymer’s expectation of taking a Volleyball team to the Devon County Finals only 9 weeks after the club had begun. On Wednesday 21st November, five girls travelled to Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot to take part.  The girls finished 7th after finishing 5th in the pool and only missing out on a chance to be in the semi finals by one point! Amazing achievement by club coach and players.

Everyone is welcome to come along and on Wednesdays to take part in afterschool sessions.

Future Opportunities Evening

Thank you to everyone who made our Future Opportunities Evening such a tremendous success. It was well supported by parents and family supporting the young people of Great Torrington School.  A big thank you to all local employers, industry representatives and educations establishments who were there to help and support our young people make decisions about their future pathways. It is so rewarding to welcome back former pupils attending with the stands supporting their employers or colleges and promoting their organisation.

One employer said,  ‘The pupils really engaged and asked appropriate questions. It is an extremely worthwhile event – the best in North Devon.’

Monday Cross Country x 40 pupils taking part at West Buckland School.

Year 9 Netball Tournament

Our first match was against Holsworthy. We were having trouble keeping possession as they were very good at intercepting. They were also tall and fast which made it harder to get to the ball and into the ‘D’.  When we did get it into the ‘D’ the shooters were having trouble finishing it. This lead to the final result being 4-0 to them.

Our second match was against Ilfracombe. We automatically won as not all their players showed up. When they did show up, we played a friendly against them with the time we had left. We won 10-4! We put up a good performance, however, I think we became a bit tired at the end which led to them scoring the 4 goals.

Our third match was our hardest yet.  It was against West Buckland. In the first half we were down by 2 as they were playing very well. In the second half, I think their energy was running out. We played amazingly and brought it back to be 5-3 to us. This was the best we had played in a long time and we deserved to win.

Our final match in our group was against Park. We lost, however we didn’t give up! They were very good but we tried our hardest. If we had kept possession more it would’ve been better for us, hence the final score being 8-0 to us.

Our final match was against Holsworthy, again.  This was the play off for fifth place. In the first half we scored none and they scored 4. In the second half we put an outstanding performance on and scored 3 goals, however, so did they.  We lost 7-3 but if we played how we did in the second half for the whole game, the result would’ve been very different. Well played girls.

Great Torrington Mayfair & Carnival Committee need you!

Planning for Mayfair is well under way, but Mayfair and the Carnival do not happen by themselves, it is Torrington people who make them happen. Trouble is folks, there are not that many of us on the committee and we are struggling. We need your help:

- We need someone to organise and oversee stewarding for the carnival

- We need someone to take on and run the prize draw, including organising the selling of tickets

- We need a few strong people to help put up and take down the maypoles on Mayfair day

- We need volunteers on Mayfair day to help put the chairs out in the morning, and, more importantly, to put them away later.

Remember, these events can only keep going for our children and grandchildren if people continue to get involved.

If you can help, please get in touch with the Carnival committee either on Facebook messenger or email Cllr Gill Clayton, gill61clayton@gmail.com
