GTS v West Buckland Chess match
Over a year ago the PFA supported Mr Stanier’s idea of
starting the GTS Chess Club and provided chess sets and
official tournament chess clocks. Mr Stanier has his
door open every lunchtime and eager pupils are sat
down playing and challenging each other. Recently Mr
Stanier and Mr Reed took some keen pupils to West
Buckland School for their first ever friendly chess
match. An excellent time was had by all and some
excellent chess was played. The Chaplin from West
Buckland School Mr Andrew Watkinson-Trim wrote to
the school complementing GTS pupils “Who were
clearly enthusiastic about their chess and keen to
compete in a spirit of mutual enjoyment”. Pupils and
staff enjoyed their evening where they enjoyed a meal
and swapping tactics with their new friends. GTS
enjoyed their first chess success with a victory of 11 ½
boards to 8 ½ boards. We now look forward to a return
match at some point at Great Torrington School.
Current top of the chess ladder is Ed Gist.
