Design Technology

"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."

- Steve Jobs

Welcome to the Design and Technology department at GTS.

Design and Technology will prepare students to participate in an increasingly technological world.

Students will gain awareness and learn from wider influences on Design and Technology including historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic factors. Students will have the opportunity to work creatively when designing and making and apply technical and practical expertise.

KS3 Curriculum

The Key Stage 3 curriculum gives pupils an opportunity to experience a variety of disciplines.

This gives pupils the experience needed to make an informed decision about their KS4 guided choices:

Year 8  A one hundred minute lesson per fortnight throughout the year.

Year 9  The start of the GCSE course AQA Design and Technology.

KS4 Curriculum

From September 2017 we will be following the new AQA Design and Technology GCSE specification. Students are required to produce a design portfolio and manufacture a product using the skills taught during year 10.

The course will be assessed via three main principles:

  • Core technical principles

  • Specialist technical principles

  • Designing and making principles

These are assessed by:

  • A 2 hour written exam with up to 100marks awarded and is worth 50% of the GCSE.

  • A non-exam assessment (NEA). This will take between 30 to 35 hours to complete. 100 marks are available and it is worth 50% of the GCSE.

Other Activities and Achievements

2016/2017 Hackfest  - Year 9 and 10 Engineers won school round of competition and have represented GTS at Venturefest.

We are a well- resourced department with 3 workshops one dedicated classroom.

We have a range of tools and equipment and are capable of manufacturing to industrial standard with machinery such as a laser cutter and vacuum forming machine.

We have a good uptake of GCSEs within the Design department.
