Welcome to the Food department here at GTS.

Our department is a lively, busy and happy place to be. Pupils learn important life skills and develop their knowledge about food and nutrition through integrated theory and practical lessons. There is a strong emphasis on independence, responsibility and learning from mistakes ensuring pupils feel confident to try out their skills outside of the classroom thus setting them on the path to a life of safe food preparation, healthy eating and responsible consumerism.

KS3 Curriculum

Autumn term – Food Inspectors.
The focus is on understanding and developing safe working practices. Pupils explore health, safety and hygiene issues in both domestic and professional kitchens by becoming food inspectors.

Spring Term – You Are What You Eat.
Pupils explore the relationship between food and health and decide if you really are what you eat.

Summer Term – Field to Fork.
As a rural school many of our students have first-hand knowledge of where their food comes from. This term explores the relationship between field and fork encouraging pupils to question if they know where their food comes from and if they care.

KS4 Curriculum

At KS4 pupils study towards the EDUQAS Level 1 and 2 Award in Hospitality and Catering. This course introduces key concepts within the hospitality and catering industry whilst building on the skills and knowledge acquired in year 8. Pupils have the opportunity to develop high level practical skills and gain a thorough understanding of the knowledge required to work successfully within the industry.

Assessment is through an online exam and a formal practical assessment.
